How It Works
Many patients have some level of anxiety when they take a trip to their dentist’s office. Some of those patients deal with an elevated level of fear that causes them to avoid the dentist altogether. Others simply do not have the time to sit through long appointments. The fact is, when you avoid your dentist appointments, you are setting yourself up for more severe pain and more expensive treatments as minor dental problems can develop into major dental issues.
A simple solution to this anxiety and lack of time is sedation dentistry. Tens of thousands of concerned patients have received important treatment through this helpful procedure. Sedation dentistry can not only help nervous patients through their treatment, but it can also aid patients who have difficulty responding to local anesthesia, patients with an overly-sensitive gag reflex, and patients who would need multiple procedures carried out in a single appointment.
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry employs medication to ease the fear and anxiety that many patients feel when considering dental treatment. Our staff will review your medical history and any medications that you may be currently taking in order to present a sedation option that will benefit you. All of the medications used in sedation dentistry have been proven to be completely safe and effective.
What Options Are Available?
Three types of sedation are available depending on the level of your anxiety:
- Commonly referred to as “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide is a soothing gas that is administered through a special nasal mask. This gas will help you to completely relax and forget your anxiety throughout your treatment. During your appointment, you will be able to communicate with your dentist and staff, but you will not be bothered by any surrounding sounds or smells. Any effect of the gas will disappear as soon as the mask is removed, and you will be able to continue with your normal schedule as soon as the appointment is over.
- Your dentist will administer a pill to you at the beginning of your appointment. You will quickly feel drowsy and become relaxed both physically and mentally. While you will have the ability to communicate with the dentist during your treatment, it is likely that you will not remember anything about it after the appointment. You will be able to return to your normal schedule shortly after.
- This level of sedation is used for patients with the most severe anxiety. A certified anesthesiologist will be present with the dental team with the sole purpose of administering and monitoring the correct dosage of sedation by way of IV. You will sleep comfortably through the treatment and awake with no memory of the procedure. Since the effects of IV sedation take a bit longer to wear off, it is required that you have someone to drive you home after your treatment is finished.
