What Is TMJ?
The joint where your lower jaw connects with your skull is known as the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). If this joint ceases to function properly, several serious situations can develop. The TMJ can cease to function properly when the joint is impacted by physical stress, a misaligned bite, trauma, or sometimes even emotional stress. The most likely outcome of these stresses is grinding or clenching the teeth. A variety of other symptoms can be the result of the accumulated pain of this disorder.
Common TMJ Symptoms
The following symptoms are possible indicators of TMJ:
- Headaches, chronic migraines
- Chronic earaches
- Teeth grinding (bruxism)
- An inability to close or open your mouth all the way
- A clicking/popping noise whenever you open your jaw
- Unexplained pain in the neck, shoulder, face, jaw or lower back
